Understanding Your Body Type

All women fall under one of three body classifications, or are a combination of types. Mesomorphs tend to be muscular, endomorphs are more rounded and voluptuous and ectomorphs are slim or linear in shape. Understanding your body type can help you to strategically plan your fitness and nutrition plan and set you up for success.


An ectomorph is a typical skinny gal. Think supermodel. They have a light build with small joints and lean muscle. Usually ectomorph’s have long thin limbs with stringy muscles and their shoulders tend to be thin with little width. Ectomorphs are the body type that is the most resistant to weight gain due to a fast metabolism.

Ectomorph Traits

  • Small “delicate” frame and bone structure
  • Flat chest
  • Small shoulders
  • Thin
  • Lean muscle mass
  • Finds it hard to gain weight
  • Fast metabolism

What to do: Make sure you are eating enough calories to keep up with your high metabolism. Workouts should be short and intense, focusing on big muscle groups (ex: interval training mixed with circuit strength training).


A mesomorph has a large bone structure, large muscles and a naturally athletic physique. They find it quite easy to gain and lose weight. Unlike ectomorphs who gain muscle with great difficulty, mesomorphs can gain muscle almost by accident. This means that mesomorphic women often end up bigger and bulkier than when they started exercising.

Mesomorph Traits

  • Athletic
  • Generally hard body
  • Well defined muscles
  • Rectangular shaped body
  • Strong
  • Gains muscle easily
  • Gains fat more easily than ectomorphs

What to do: If you are trying to lose weight, you should first focus on fat loss through diet and a combination of light weight training and cardio. Once you’ve lost the weight you wanted, you can add resistance training for specific parts of the body.


The endomorph body type is solid and generally soft. Endomorphs gain fat very easily. Endomorphs are usually of a shorter build with thick arms and legs. Muscles are strong, especially the upper legs. Endomorphs find they are naturally strong in leg exercises like the squat.

Endomorphs Traits

  • Soft and round body
  • Gains muscle and fat very easily
  • Is generally short
  • “Stocky” build
  • Round physique
  • Finds it hard to lose fat
  • Slow metabolism
  • Muscles not so well defined

What to do: Achieve fat loss through diet and cardio exercise. Workouts should combine cardio and strength training and you should do additional cardio on your days off from strength training.

It may sound like endomorphs don’t have a chance to be in shape. False! While they do have to work harder, a fit endomorph is a force to be reckoned with. Think of Marilyn Monroe, J. LO, Scarlett Johansson, and Beyonce- all endomorphs. What’s the moral of the story? In shape endomorphs look good naked! So keep up the hard work.

A Combination of Body Types

We are not bound by these 3 body types. In fact, most people have a combination of two body types. These combinations are either ectomorph/mesomorph or mesomorph/endomorph. It is not uncommon to find a pure mesomorph that gains weight like an endomorph for example.

I am a combination of an Ectomorph and Mesomorph. I have bigger bones but I find it extremely easy to build muscle. I do not gain weight at a moderate rate. When I was young I could eat anything and not gain weight but as I age, I have noticed that I can gain weight much more easily than I use to. I keep my body balanced by eating mostly vegetables for my carbs, lean proteins, and supplementing my fats with nuts, seeds and healthy oils.
